Plus belle encore qu'aux temps de Philippe-le-Bon et de l'empereur Charles, plus commercante, grace au canal dont l'activite de Jean de Locquenghien l'avait dotee, aussi manufacturiere, car en perdant ses fabriques de draps, jadis renommees dans toute l'Europe, elle avait su s'approprier de nouvelles industries: la fabrication des tapis, celles des dentelles, des camelots, des carrosses, sources inepuisables de richesses, elle atteignit enfin, elle depassa les villes voisines, ses anciennes rivales. Anvers et Bruges, au port desert, Gand, ou l'on eut vainement cherche la population ouvriere qui fournissait autrefois a ses tribuns des armees redoutables, Louvain, ou l'universite seule entretenait quelque vie, ne pouvaient plus lui disputer le premier rang.
