J. J. Rousseau fut incontestablement l'un des écrivains les plus influents du dix-huitième siècle; Voltaire seul peut lui être opposé, mais comme un pôle est opposé à l'autre. Le parallèle entre les deux auteurs a été fait trop souvent pour que nous soyons tenté de le recommencer. D'ailleurs, nous n'avons à nous occuper que de Rousseau, et encore est-ce moins dans ses œuvres que nous voulons l'étudier, que dans son caractère et son individualité. Nous ne devons même nous attacher qu'à un seul point de vue, celui de son état mental pendant les vingt-cinq dernières années de son existence.
