L'espagne était, il ya un snecle, la plus bourgeoise et la plus stagnante des nations européennes. Une longue paix intérieure, un gouvernement paternel, une administra tion vétilleuse, mais probe et régulière, avaient protégé sa convalescence après les terribles guerres du seizième et du dix - septième swele. Elle s'était repeuplée, enrichie, et ne semblait demander qu'à vivre en paix dans l'éden un peu maigre et un peu âpre que la nature lui a fait. C etait une bonne et pacifique nation, craignant Dieu, aimant le roi, vivant frugalement avec noblesse et simplicité.
L'espagne contemporaine est à bien des égards la fille légitime de cette respectable Espagne d'antan, mais c'est une fille romanesque et aventureuse que sa mère asouvent querellée, battue et maudite, avant de lui céder la place dans la maison. De 1793 a 1876, l'espagne a presque toujours été en guerre soit avec ses voisins, soit avec elle même. Elle a subi les désastres d'une invasion, elle a perdu son splendide domaine colonial, elle a été désolée à deux reprises par la guerre civile, elle a passé par tous les coups d'état et par tous les régimes, elle a connu le pire despotisme et la plus complète anarchie, elle est devenue une nation militaire et remuante, une nation d'enfants terribles, longtemps réputés ingouvernables.
