Ali an-Nidhami as-Samarqandi in the 5th century AH (11th century CE) for a patron from the Ghurid dynasty, then ruling eastern Iran and northern India. It consists of four separate discourses, each devoted to a different profession considered by the author to be essential to the smooth functioning of a kingdom: viz., the secretary, the poet, the astrologer, and the physician. The latter three are only briefly considered, but the discourse on secretaries is particularly extensive, containing a wealth of anecdotes and quotations. The author's aim in writing this book was to provide a guide to rulers on how to choose and employ the best secretaries, poets, astrologers, and physicians for their courts. He believed that these professions were essential for the maintenance of a just and prosperous society, and that it was important for rulers to understand their respective roles and responsibilities. Much of the advice that the author offers is still relevant today, providing valuable insights both into the history of these professions and into the art of writing persuasive letters and speeches.
