La quistione sul luogo di nascita di Cristoforo lombo in questi ultimi tempi è stata ripresa e dibattuta con nuovo vigore e spesso con vero accanimento. Ma Genova nulla ha sofierto dalle nuove armi imbranditc contro di Lei, e si è invece vantaggiata di molto nella scoperta di altri documenti. Sicchè per la sostanza della quistione nulla vi è a cambiare in ciò che ho stampato nel 1885. L'editore Treves avrebbe voluto che io ri prendessi in mano codesta quistione ed esponessi al let tore anche le fasi di questa lotta rinnovata con gli ul timi risultati della critica. Ed io molto volentieri avrei soddisfatto a questo suo giusto desiderio. Ma ora tutto il mio tempo è assorbito dall' Opera sui Caboto, e poichè non mi è dato di trattare la questione come la sua im portanza vorrebbe, -ho preferito lasciare le cose come erano, e solo mettere in fine questo semplice cenno. A miglior agio spero di tornare di nuovo su questa e su altre questioni Colombiane, e discorrerne con tutta quella larghezza che l' argomento richiede.
