Pour bien des parents l'enfant raisonnable est une petite marionnette qui ne doit bouger que si on en tire les fils; il doit avoir des mains pour ne toucher a rien, des yeux pour ne pas petiller de desir a tout ce qu'il voit, des petits pieds pour ne point trotter bruyamment sur le plancher, une langue pour se taire. Beaucoup de gens elevent leurs enfants non pour les enfants memes, mais pour eux. J'ai connu des parents qui ne voulaient pas marier leur fille, afin de ne pas se separer d'elle; d'autres qui ne voulaient pas que leur fils prit tel ou tel metier (par exemple celui de veterinaire) parce que ce metier leur deplaisait a eux, etc. Les memes regles dominaient toute leur conduite envers leurs enfants. C'est l'education egoiste. Il est une autre sorte d'education qui prend pour but non plus le plaisir du pere, mais le plaisir du fils apprecie par le pere. Ainsi un paysan. qui a passe toute sa vie au soleil, considerera comme un devoir d'epargner a son fils le travail de la terre; il l'elevera pour on faire un petit bureaucrate, un pauvre fonctionnaire etouffant dans son bureau, qui s'en ira mourir phtisique dans quelque ville. La vraie education est desinteressee: elle eleve l'enfant pour lui-meme, elle l'eleve aussi et surtout pour la patrie, pour l'humanite entiere.
