All persons, except the trained writer or speaker, find themselves often unable - in speech or conversation - to convey the ideas that are present to the mind with exactness, or to indicate with nicety the subtle shades and distinctions which accompany the development of these ideas. The vocabulary of most individuals is extremely limited, and this inadequacy of phraseology is productive of much misunderstanding, annoyance, and embarrassment. The cultivation of an exact use of language is necessary to the best exercise of thought; a misapplied or a misunderstood term may occasion interminable disputes; a misnomer has changed the current of history; a verbal sophism has deluded public opinion and been fraught with appalling consequences to the race.
There are few, if any, words in our language which are absolutely synonymous; those which are called synonyms express one or more characteristic ideas in common, but almost without exception they are divided by delicate shades of difference. To one hesitating in the expression of an idea and dissatisfied with a word chosen because it is too general or too definite, because it expresses too much or too little, a collection of words in general use divided into their synonymous relationships must prove of great service in discovering the term which expresses the absolute shade of meaning which it is intended to convey.
