Synopsis

Excerpt from The Book of Cut Flowers: A Complete Guide to the Preparing, Arranging, and Preserving of Flowers, for Decorative Purposes Many people who are fond of flowers have but little knowledge of the length of life in water of any but a few of the commonest kinds; of the best methods of cutting and of keeping them fresh; of using them economically; and of arranging them effectively whether as regards the form and colour harmony of the flowers and foliage, or the variety and suitability of the vessels holding them, or the harmony of the flowers and vessels with their surroundings. To spread a knowledge of such matters and to stimulate investigation, my wife and myself some years ago offered prizes at the Dundee Flower Show for arrangements of cut flowers in suitable vessels, the judging not taking place till the third day, in order to roughly test the lasting qualities of the flowers. The experiment resulted in disappointment, only one exhibit being meritorious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history and art of using cut flowers for decoration. It examines the evolution of floral customs in England, tracing their roots back to the medieval period and documenting their changing use in homes, churches, and even funerals. The author explores how the use of flowers has evolved through centuries, from the lavish floral displays of the Tudor era to the more restrained arrangements of later times. The book goes beyond mere description, offering a nuanced exploration of the themes of fashion, national taste, and individual preference in the context of floral aesthetics. It considers the relative value of flowers, arguing that the beauty of common flowers can rival that of rarer varieties when arranged with artistry and sensitivity. The author also discusses the role of color, scent, and form in selecting and arranging flowers, offering practical advice on creating harmonious combinations and avoiding common pitfalls. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history and art of floral decoration, offering a unique perspective on the enduring power of flowers to inspire and delight.
