Excerpt from The Closing Argument on Behalf of the Bunker Hill Monument Association at the Public Hearing Before the Mayor and Aldermen of Charlestown, in Favor of the New Avenue to the Monument The petitions of Samuel. S. Willson and fifty others, of James F. Hunnewell and others, of Isaac Sweetser and others, of Gideon Haynes and others (besides other petitions), all in aid of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, for an avenue, sixty feet wide, from the City Square direct to the monument, have for several months been before the Mayor and Aldermen of Charles-town. The petitioners asked for a public hearing before the whole Board, which was readily granted. On the 12th of October, Samuel S. Willson, Esq., counsel for the petitioners, opened the case, and a portion of the testimony was introduced, and the plans and estimates presented. The meeting was then adjourned to the 19th of October, to be held in the chamber of the Common Council. At the hearing, other testimony was offered on behalf of the petitioners, and William W. Wheildon, Esq., made his Argument on behalf of the Association. At the conclusion of his able and exhaustive argument upon his branch of the subject, the board were reminded that this was the anniversary of the surrender at Yorktown, which secured to Bunker Hill an undying fame; and that it was a fit occasion for them to entertain the proposal to open this avenue, so as to make its Matchless Memorial more conspicuous and impressive.
