Excerpt from A Brief Account of the Life, Writings, and Inventions of Sir Samuel Morland: Master of Mechanics to Charles the Second All that the Author has aimed at in the following pages has been to rescue from oblivion the actions and writings of a man, who ought long since to have held a distinguished situation in the scientific annals of Great Britain. Prior to the appearance of the biography of Sir Samuel Morland in Chalmers' Dictionary, no notice whatever had been taken of him: the reason of this neglect being probably owing in a great measure to the scarcity of his works. The above-mentioned article, though tolerably accurate with respect to his life, is very incorrect in other matters, as may be readily seen by comparing it with the following pages. A short tract on Arithmetic is inserted at the end, note that it has any reference to the subject of our memoir, but because it appeared to be a seasonable, opportunity for rescuing a curious piece of antiquity from destruction. This book provides guidance for fire services on assembling sufficient water sources to combat large blazes and how to work fire engines manually when needed. The author, an expert in fire engineering, discusses the amount of water required to control fires of varying intensity, and shares the most efficient methods for supplying water, including elevated tanks, underground pipes, and rehydrant systems. The importance of using the appropriate type of jet based on the distance and height the water needs to reach is also highlighted. Moreover, the book explores how to adapt water supplies in existing structures, such as using reservoirs and sunken tanks. The author emphasizes the benefits and drawbacks of different methods for acquiring water from mains and pipes, and proposes practical solutions for maximizing water availability during fire emergencies. Finally, the book details the advantages and disadvantages of plugs and recocks, and outlines how to apply manual power most effectively when operating fire engines, providing insights into the optimal number of personnel, engine size, and reciprocating versus rotary motion.
