Excerpt from The Strand District A survey of London, a record of the greatest of all cities that should preserve her history, her historical and literary associations, her mighty buildings, past and present, a book that should comprise all that Londoners love, all that they ought to know of their heritage from the past - this was the work on which Sir Walter Besant was engaged when he died. As he himself said of it: "This work fascinates me more than anything else I've ever done. Nothing at all like it has ever been attempted before. I've been walking about London for the last thirty years, and I find something fresh in it every day." He had seen one at least of his dreams realized in the People's Palace, but he was not destined to see this mighty work on London take form. He died when it was still incomplete. His scheme included several volumes on the history of London as a whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author:
English novelist, dramatist, historical writer, critic and philanthropist. Besant's portrayal of London's slums initiated the movement which led to the betterment of the poor. His first book was Studies in Early French Poetry. He developed a literary collaboration with James Rice and together they wrote 14 novels. In 1884, Besant helped in starting the Society of Authors to protect writers and their works. His first separate novel, All Sorts and Conditions of Men (1882) was about London's slums. It resulted in the establishment of the Palace in 1887 which became a source of education and amusement for the poor. His sympathy with these people is also apparent in his work Children of Gibeon (1886). Besant wrote 32 independent novels as well as essays and plays. His diverse writings include biographies, historical and critical works. He was knighted in 1895.
