Synopsis

Excerpt from History of the North Russell Street, M. E. Church and Sabbath School: With a Brief Account of St. John's Church at the Odeon Pursuant to a vote of our teachers, in June last, we instituted measures to prepare and publish a history of the North Russell Street Sabbath School. We had the good fortune to secure the services of one to act as our historian, who has had an extensive knowledge of the school from its commencement, and whose qualifications for the work need no commendation from us. It was not our original design to refer to the church, beyond what was necessary to the history of the school; but considerations which we need not enumerate here, have led to the production of a history of the church, and of a brief account of the St. John's Church at the Odeon. To the past and present members of our church and school, the subject matter must be of thrilling interest. For such it has been prepared. And yet we are not without hope that it will be extensively read by others. True, there are some items not of general interest; but as the price is very low, no one need feel that he pays for matter of purely local and personal interest. We think the chapter on "building and finance," might prove a salutary lesson to young societies. The account of the Odeon enterprise is certainly worth the price of the book to any person not familiar with its history. And we are sure that any Sabbath-school teacher, who reads the chapters on "The Means of Interesting the Children," "Education for Usefulness," and "Sacred Memoirs," will be richly repaid. The name of the editor may appear, to a stranger, of frequent mention on these pages. Our history would not be complete without it, and yet from delicacy, Mr. King has refrained from the use of his own name, where others would have inserted it. It is not for us to amend his work, and yet we take the liberty of saying, that he not only aided as a clergyman, in the organization of the church and school, till the appointment

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Originally a part of Bennett Street Church, this book details the origins, struggles, and eventual growth of the North Russell Street Sabbath School as it established itself as a Methodist church in 1836. The text follows the development of the church through periods of division, financial hardship, and growth in membership, from its first meetings in a schoolhouse to its establishment as an independent church at the Wells School House. The book presents an intimate historical account of the trials and triumphs of this Methodist congregation in the years preceding the Civil War, making it a valuable resource for those interested in the history of Methodism in New England.
