He is conscious that while so many have most painful and severe sufferings these are not always clearly understood. In common experience such expressions as that suffering is a strange mystery, or the will of God to which submission should be at once given even though it be all strange and unaccountable are continually met with. Such modes of speaking show clearly that the meaning of suffering has not been grasped in any effective way. And not unfrequently the sufferings of time are held to be so necessary that here no relief can be obtained, and that only in the fuller and perfect life of Heaven is any recompense to be secured for what men must suffer here. In view of this is it not the duty of all of us to make some strenuous endeavour to reach a solution of this age-long problem this "riddle of the weary earth," as it his been called. Under the obligation of this thought this volume has been issued, and it is hoped that the comfort obtained by the writer may be passed on to all who perchance may read its pages.
