Excerpt from Thanksgiving: A Sermon Preached in the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, on Thursday, November 28, 1861
The simple and obvious meaning of the text is, that we have always something to be thankful for; that gratitude is due to God in every earthly con dition in which a living man can be placed. And this is a truth appropriate to this occasion, for we are observing our great national festival in circum stances wherein some men judge that the keeping a fast in sackcloth were a more seemly service. It cannot be denied that we are to-day a deeply dis tressed people, and that our attempted offerings of thanksgiving will ascend largely from desolate house holds and sorrowing hearts.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, published in 1861, offers a profound exploration of gratitude in the face of hardship. It was written amidst the turmoil of the American Civil War, a time when the author, preaching from a pulpit in Philadelphia, challenged his congregation to find reasons for thanksgiving despite the deep divisions and struggles plaguing the nation. The author grapples with the question of why one should give thanks in the midst of such despair. He argues that gratitude is not merely a feeling evoked by good fortune but a vital virtue, a grace that flourishes even in times of adversity. He examines the nature of thankfulness and identifies its key components: joy stemming from received blessings, and love for the benefactor. He then delves into the cultivation of thankfulness, suggesting that it is nurtured through humility, benevolence, a clear conscience, sound judgment, patience, and above all, unwavering faith in Godââ â¢s love. Through his powerful sermon, the author connects the act of giving thanks with the very core of Christian faith, underscoring that it is a virtue that transcends circumstance and strengthens the human spirit in the face of even the most challenging trials.
