Excerpt from Address Before the Bunker Hill Monument Association: At the Annual Meeting, June 17, 1865 A considerable portion of this publication is occupied with commemorative notice of Edward Everett, who was not only one of the founders of this Association, but was the only one of the original associates who continued his official connection and rendered to it his invaluable services up to the recent period of his death. It was proper, therefore, that extended notices should be taken of him by the Association on their anniversary, which his eloquence has so signally illustrated. Would that the tribute were worthier! The resolutions in memory of the late President of the United States and in honor of the present distinguished incumbent were cordially adopted, as expressing not only the united voice of the Association, but of the nation also, in this portentous period of its history. At this rate, our treasury will be rapidly accumulating a fund sufficient to meet the wants of the Association in carrying out the improvements long in contemplation, and to subserve the purposes of patriotic commemoration in the most appropriate and enduring manner. Our grounds never looked more inviting than at present. The Spring, earlier in its advent than usual, clothed them in its most attractive robes, as if the bar binger of coming events.
