Excerpt from The Flight of the Eagle This tale, in spite of its title, is not a romance, but an actual historic episode, told with hardly a freer use of the historical imagination than is employed by the more popular and picturesque of our professed historians. There is, however, this difference between my method and theirs, viz. that while they write directly, I aim at a similar result indirectly through a certain dramatization. The same method has been adopted, I think very effectively, by Carlyle, at times, in his history of Frederick the Great. There is probably an Art as well as a Science of history. If that be so, the present work may be regarded as an experiment in that kind of composition, a kind which demands the employment of more than one or two mental faculties on the part both of the reader and of the writer. The authorities for the story are the "Annals of the Four Masters;" Philip O'Sullivan's charmingly Herodotean narrative, in Latin, entitled Historia Hiberni; O'Clery's "Bardic Life of Hugh Roe;" and the "Calendar of State Papers, Ireland," from 1587 forward. The colouring, the visualization and dramatization, are, however, derived from a wider circle of contemporary literature. I may add that the book contains almost nothing for which there is not direct or indirect historical justification.
