Synopsis

Excerpt from Liberty, Equality, Fraternity

Such, stated of course in the most general terms, is the religion of which I take Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity' to be the creed. I do not believe it for the following, amongst other reasons.

I am not the advocate of Slavery, Caste, and Hatred, nor do I deny that a sense may be given to the words, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, in which they may be regarded as good. I wish to assert with respect to them two propositions.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex and enduring ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity, concepts that have shaped political thought and social movements for centuries. The author challenges the prevailing notion of liberty as a universally desirable and achievable goal, arguing that it is often used to justify an unchecked individualism that ignores the need for social order and collective responsibility. Drawing inspiration from the writings of John Stuart Mill, the author scrutinizes the idea of individual freedom, suggesting that its unqualified embrace can lead to moral relativism and undermine the very foundations of morality itself. The book explores the inherent tensions between individual freedom and the need for social cohesion, examining how the pursuit of liberty can sometimes conflict with the common good. Through a blend of historical analysis and philosophical inquiry, the book dissects the notion that these principles can serve as a foundation for a just and harmonious society, ultimately revealing a more nuanced and challenging understanding of their role in human affairs.
