Synopsis

Excerpt from The Life of Henry Laurens: With a Sketch of the Life of Lieutenant-Colonel John Laurens

All dates previous to September 3, 1752, the first day of the corrected calendar, and called September 14, are either marked Old Style or are corrected to New Style except in the case of letters, statutes, etc., whose dates are always quoted as in the original for convenience in reference. The year is, of course, also corrected for all dates between January Ist and March 24th, inclusive, before 1753. This may lead at times to apparent contradiction, as most writers on South Carolina history have not corrected the dates. I consider that it is essential to do so in order to be on the same basis as the rest of the world.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and times of a prominent figure in 18th-century South Carolina, offering a rich tapestry of personal narrative interwoven with the social, economic, and political landscape of the era. Born into a Huguenot family, the book's subject rose from humble beginnings to become a successful merchant and influential statesman. His journey unfolds against the backdrop of a burgeoning colony, where the cultivation of rice and indigo fueled prosperity and shaped a unique societal structure. The author meticulously reconstructs this world, illuminating the dynamics between planters, merchants, and the complex realities of the slave trade. Through personal letters and historical documents, the book explores not only the outward events of this man's life but also his inner world. We encounter his strong moral compass, unwavering determination, and evolving sense of American identity. His struggles and triumphs illuminate universal themes of ambition, family, and the pursuit of justice. Ultimately, this book offers more than a biography; it provides a window into a pivotal period in American history and the enduring values that shaped a nation.
