Excerpt from Arabian Medicine: Being the Fitzpatrick Lectures Delivered at the College of Physicians in November 1919 and November 1920
IN the course of the last ten years there have been con ferred upon me two public honour's which have given me the greatest pleasure and satisfaction, my election in 191 1 as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and the presentation, on the occasion of my fifty-ninth birthday in February, 192 1, of a complimentary address (accompanied by very beautiful presents)-si.gned by a number of representative Persians, expressing theirflap preciation of the services which, they were kind enough to say, I had rendered to their language and literature.

This book explores the history of Arabian medicine, a subject often overlooked in the Western world, yet representing a fascinating fusion of Greek, Indian, Persian, and Syrian medical knowledge. The author traces the evolution of medical terminology in Arabic, examines the contributions of notable Persian medical writers from the ninth to fourteenth centuries, and delves into the practices and theories of healing within the Islamic world during the Middle Ages. The book discusses the role of dissection in Islamic medicine, the development of hospitals, and the use of psychotherapy. It reveals the influence of Arabian medicine on European thought and its profound legacy on the field of medicine in the West. Through this book, readers gain a deeper understanding of the intellectual achievements of the Islamic world and the rich tapestry of medical knowledge that emerged during this period.
