A Bible that refuses to meet this demand may serve the needs Of a coterie; it cannot Speak home to a wider humanity. On the other hand, a translation which would break away from the past and pedantically renounce the moving and living rhythm of earlier workers would make no wide appeal to the popular mind. Having no root in the soil of a great literary tradition it would soon wither away.
