Excerpt from The History of Ireland, Vol. 1: To the Coming of Henry II This volume is the fruit of many years' labour. I have to the best of my ability made every point the subject of independent inquiry and written it in great part ex messibus meis. I have not worked in the expectation of literary fame or pecuniary profit, but because I had been convinced from early manhood that no greater service could be done to the Irish race at home and abroad than to tell them the naked truth as far as it can be ascertained about their early history. This will, no doubt, dispel many illusions which they will be loath to part with; but on the other hand, unless I greatly deceive myself, it will convey lessons of high political import which they may take hopefully to heart. The early history of Ireland is a story of arrested evolution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Drawing on various Irish and other sources, the author meticulously unravels many of the mysteries and untangles the legends and myths that make up the early chapters of Irish history. The author presents a fascinating account of the pre-Gaelic tribes that inhabited Ireland, including the Firbolgs, the Tuatha DÃ Danann, and the Fomorians. They examine the origins and interrelationships of these groups, and discuss their cultural, social, and political systems. The book also provides a deep dive into the arrival of the Gaels, their conquest of Ireland, and the establishment of the Gaelic civilization that would dominate the country for centuries to come. By examining the archaeological, linguistic, and literary evidence, the author sheds light on the complex and dynamic nature of Irish society in this period. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the early history of Ireland and the origins of the Irish people. It is a comprehensive and engaging work that brings to life a fascinating and often-overlooked period of history. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
