Synopsis

Excerpt from Sailors and Soldiers Manual of Devotion This little manual of devotion was prepared, with the aid of the Liturgy and other devotions of a kindred spirit, at the request of a friend, once an Officer in the Army, but now a Minister of the Church, for the use of Sailors and Soldiers. A perfect adaptation of it to the peculiar circumstances of these two classes of men, could only be made by one intimately acquainted with their respective characters and habits; who had been associated with them in difficulties and dangers; and who would therefore be touched with a feeling of their infirmities and wants. In the absence of qualifications so essential to the proper accomplishment of the work, it was undertaken with diffidence, and executed with fear and distrust. The hope nevertheless is fondly cherished, that the present effort, however imperfect, to supply an acknowledged and deep felt want will not be found so unsuitable to the design as to be altogether in vain. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides devout seamen a guide to daily prayer and reflection. It draws on the teachings of the established Church of England as well as other sources of religious devotion. The author, though humble and doubtful of their abilities, composed these prayers in response to a friend's request. They intended to offer religious comfort and guidance to sailors and soldiers. The book offers prayers for many occasions: a soul burdened with sins, a grievous sinner delaying repentance, and prayers for use in battle and at sea during storms or in danger. Prayers are also included to be used by Commanders or Captains with their troops or crews. These prayers acknowledge the authority and power of Commanders, but emphasize their need for humility, their duty to consider the well-being of those in their charge, and to show mercy and kindness to all. This book is a valuable resource for those looking to deepen their faith and engage in a disciplined spiritual practice. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
