Excerpt from Madame Izan: A Tourist Story John Windeatt saw her for the first time in the lift of the big hotel at Hong Kong. That was an epoch in Windeatt's life, though he was not at the moment fully conscious of the fact. He did, however, feel vaguely that something rather out of the common had happened, though this was only that the most beautiful woman he had ever beheld suddenly stepped into the dim, fusty, steaming box which was conveying him and his sister to their recently-acquired rooms on the fifth story. She entered with a little wavering movement, out of keeping with the Diana-like carriage of her head and bust. This was the suggestion she gave - that of a Greek goddess just descended from Olympus. She had the radiant, surprised expression which, under these circumstances, a goddess might be supposed to wear, and seemed to exhale, as it were, some celestial aroma of youth, and to personify the freshest joy of existence. Product Description:
Excerpt from Madame Izan: A Tourist Story

No other passenger appearing, the four went up together. In speaking of the four, the Chinese conductor is naturally not included. This person leaned in the corner, his head on one side, an ex pression of weary resignation upon his stolid flat face as he languidly fanned himself with one hand, while the rope slithered softly through the other. Never in tourist experience had that Chinaman been known to speak, smile, or, indeed, vary the blank, unintelligent stare with which he greeted humanity as it presented itself at the entrance to the lift. He smiled now, the feeblest ghost of a smile, and he spoke, too, later, when the goddess addressed him, with a pretty imperious air of curiosity.
