A la fin de la première guerre mondiale, la Pologne renaît de ses cendres. Elle doit trouver sa place sur la scène internationale. Au de-là de l'insertion dans les affaires du monde, cela est une façon d'assurer la pérennité de l'existence du nouvel Etat polonais. Ainsi, la Pologne devient très active sur le terrain diplomatique. Au cours de la première moitié des années 1920, l'objectif principal est la reconnaissance de ces frontières. Toutefois, l'instabilité gouvernementale empêche la mise en place d'une action extérieure sur la durée. A la suite du coup d'état de Pilsudski en mai 1926, la Pologne peut se projeter plus sereinement dans le concert des nations.
