Mr. Gower felt hurt and disappointed. He had meant kindly in seeking Naomi out, and he thought she should have known that, and not have hardened herself against him. He was a good man, poor himself but very generous, and hard-working, and tenderhearted, and he was disappointed that Naomi, despite the promise of her face, was just like other people--impracticable, unless they were in trouble and wanted something. But he hid this feeling to the best of his ability, and showed as much interest in her as he could, asking her test questions about her inmost feelings without the faintest suspicion that he was taking a liberty. Of course he would not have spoken so to the fashion able ladies to whom he ministered; but they were different. He took his leave with the consciousness that his visit had been a failure, but he promised to come again, and Naomi thanked him civilly. He did come again, two years later. Of course things were much worse at the shoe-shop in the time; but how could he tell that when the place was clean, and the child looked chubby and well-fed? He congratulated Naomi on the child's growth, and on the fact that she had nothing to complain of. On the occasion of his third visit, the shoemaker lay dead, and Naomi, alone but for the sleeping child, was silently sewing his shroud. Mr. Gower was terribly shocked.
