HE exhaustion consequent upon his interview with Maurice rendered the lawyer so prostrate that for some few days following all thought of a journey was entirely out of question. With extreme quiet and very great care he might probably, even now, last a few weeks longer, the physician stated, but the undertaking of so long a journey as that he was contemplating would still further hasten his end, as his late efforts had already done; indeed, it was not at all unlikely that he might die upon the way. The dying man received this intelligence with his usual indifferent demeanour, and his intention to travel was by no means altered by it; he seemed the rather strengthened in his former resolve. Now that his chief and few arrangements with regard to this life had been made, and the breach between himself and his old friend healed up, he seemed to have no desire for that lengthening of life which had been held out to him. There was no need for him to last a few weeks longer, he said; he only wished for sufficient time to reach Marion and die beside her, ending his restless, roving career in his native county. He hated London; and as the days went by, and he gradually revived again, he became feverishly impatient to commence the journey in spite of all remonstrance, and with a peculiar waywardness insisted that Marion Eeynolds should neither be sent for nor informed as to his condition, or that he was coming--there was no need to make a fuss.
