At their junction lies the region of our interest. The deltas of the Nile and the Euphrates are a thousand miles apart. The roads from the one to the other circle the sterile desert which lies in the direct line between them. Life was more generously provided for in those favored river valleys than in the neighboring countries. In general it seems that primitive races of men were inclined to settle in fertile river lands and upon coastal plains near the sea where it was possible to acquire the means of livelihood continuously without nomadism. They would desire to stop the encroachments of envious marauders, and the superior productiveness of their chosen sites equipped them to resist outsiders. The inhabitants of a river valley have a richer and more easily defended home than coastal populations. Those open to the sea have not only to fear an enemy from the mountains but also piracy from the water. Nomadic savages live too nearly a hand-to-mouth existence to sustain long battle, while advanced peoples in the rich country have the sinews of defence. Fortified towns, supplies of food, and better weapons give them the advantage over brute force. As one looks along the axis of the three-fold continent, the parallel of thirty degrees north latitude, one notices a succession of mountains, deserts, and waterways, and particularly the desert plateau of Arabia flanked by fertile regions towards the Nile valley and towards the Euphrates. It is entirely probable that the Arabian peninsula furnished an influential portion of the population which the early historical picture allows us to see in the two river valleys.
