He has certainly the advantage of Kepler in another point, when he asks why the sun only attracts the planets, and why the planets only resist motion, and do not produce it. As the first sentence in which the law was (though but as a supposition) announced, which has since been found to regulate the motions of all the planets, must be a curiosity, we shall give it at length from p. 23 of Astr. Phil. 'Virtus autem ilia, qui sol prehendit seuharpagat planetas, corporalls quso ipsi pro manibus est, lineis rectis in ornnem muudi araplitudinem emissa quasi species solis cum illius corpore rotatur: cum ergo sit corporalis, imminuitur, et cxtenuatur in majori spatio et interuallo, ratio autem hujus imminntioniseadem est, acluminis, in ratione nempe duplrl interuallnrum, sed eversS. Hoc non negauit Keplerus, attaracn virtutem motricem in simpU tantum ratione intcruallorum contendit imminui:' &c. Wc shall also mention of Bouillaud his Opus novum ad Arilhmeticam inflnitorum, Paiis, 1682, which is a continuation of the researches contained in the Arith. infln. of Wallis, hut not applied to geometry: and also his Catalogus Bibliotheca; Thuanee, made by him in conjunction with James and Peter Dupuis (Puteanus), Paris, 1679. This is an excellent representation of the state of a library of the time, and we shall have frequent occasion to quote it. (Biog. Univ., Life by Delambre, and Delambre Hist. Ast. Mod.) Among the tables of the Astronomia Philolaica are the Rudolphine catalogue of stars; the catalogue of southern stars furnished to Bayer by Americus Vespusius and others, sent to Kepler by Bartschius from Bayer's manuscripts; and some Persian tables brought into Europe by George Chrysococca. George Long (1800 1879) was a British classical scholar. He held professorships in Greek and Latin at the University of London and the University of Virginia. His translation of Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius was published in 1862 and is considered the gold standard of Aurelius translations.
