About the Author:
Bernardino de Sahagun (Sahagun ca. 1499-Ciudad de Mexico, 1590), Espana. Su nombre original es Bernardino de Rivera. Sahagun escribio en nahuatl y castellano, y su obra es muy valiosa para la reconstruccion de la historia del Mexico anterior a la Conquista. Hacia 1520 Sahagun estudio en la Universidad de Salamanca. Alli aprendio latin, historia, filosofia y teologia. Hacia 1525 entro en la orden franciscana y en 1529 se fue a Mexico en mision con otros frailes, encabezados por fray Antonio de Ciudad Rodrigo. En 1536 Bernardino de Sahagun fundo el Imperial Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Tlaltelulco. Desde el comienzo enseno latin alli. El proposito del Colegio era la instruccion academica y religiosa de jovenes de la nobleza nahualt. Bernardino estuvo luego en conventos de Xochimilco, Huejotzingo y Cholula;fue misionero en Puebla, Tula y Tepeapulco (1539-1558);definidor provincial y visitador de la Custodia de Michoacan (1558). En 1577 sus trabajos fueron confiscados por orden real y sus investigaciones sobre el mundo azteca fueron mal consideradas.
