Not illustrated.1899 Excerpt: ... GALVANIZED IRON. IMPORTANCE OF THE GALVANIZED IRON TRADE. The importance and volume of this trade can readily be ascertained from a consideration of the following particulars. The total shipments for 1894 amounted to nearly 170,000 (one hundred and seventy thousand) tons, an advance on 1893 of 3200 tons, and on 1892 of nearly 13,000 tons. Australia was the best customer, taking 41,700 (forty-one thousand seven hundred) tons; India next, with 28,000 (twenty-eight thousand) tons; South Africa, 20,600 (twenty thousand six hundred) tons; and the Argentine, 18,000 (eighteen thousand) tons. Alike, as regards Australia, the Argentine and South Africa, the demand was larger than in either of the two previous years, and, as regards India, the demand was almost equal to 1893 or 1892. The total value for 1894 was,£1,952,066 (one million nine hundred and fifty-two thousand and sixty-six pounds!). B In 1893 the value of the shipments was "2,045,770; in 1892, 2,077,068. The total for three years was the enormous sum of six millions and seventy-four thousand nine hundred and four pounds. The remarkable manner in which the export demand for galvanized iron kept up and increased in 1895 is a matter of much gratifying comment; and last year has beaten all previous records, and surpassed even the greatest expectations of the makers, who were reckoning on a total shipment of 200,000 tons at the most. Instead, the figures come out 204,200 (two hundred and four thousand two hundred) tons. So that last year exceeded the previous year by 34,200 (thirty-four thousand two hundred) tons.
