UCH industry has been bestowed in recent times upon the history of the borough of Llanidloes. The Municipal Commissioners reported in 1832 that no person present at the enquiry ever saw the Charter of the Borough of Llanidloes; it had been much sought for in London and elsewhere, but to no purpose : nor could a copy be discovered. William Owen, K.C., an alderman, and a relative of our late County Member of Parliament, informed the Commission that searches had been made, and at considerable expense, but nothing had been found. It was surmised that the charter might be in the possession of Lord Mostyn, who purchased and held the lands which it was conjectured the charter gave to the burgesses. This surmise was perhaps accounted for by Alderman Thomas Edward Marsh, who told them that 50 years before, when a solicitor's clerk, he had had given a mutilated piece of parchment to transcribe and it contained the words " the precincts of the borough." The manuscript referred to was in the possession of Mr. Howell, the agent of Sir Edward Lloyd of Berthlwyd, who was the uncle of Lord Mostyn. Others surmised that the charter was at Wynnstay in the possession of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, Bart., who, it was believed, had purchased the Manor of Arwystli from the Duke of Leeds. Careful search among the documents of Lord Mostyn failed to discover any such document. Since that period Mr. E. Rowley Morris in 1887 made an exhaustive search at the Public Record Office for a Charter or Charters relating to the Town of Llanidloe...
