About the Author:
Carl Ferdinand Max Hauptmann wurde am 11.5.1858 in Ober-Salzbrunn/Schlesien geboren; er starb am 4.2.1921 in Schreiberhau/Riesengebirge. Der ältere Bruder von Gerhart Hauptmann war als Kind schwach und kränkelnd, er blieb bis zum dreizehnten Lebensjahr im Elternhaus. Von 1872 bis 1880 besuchte er die Realschule in Breslau; anschließend begann er in Jena ein Studium der Philosophie, Physiologie und Biologie und promovierte 1883 über ein biologisches Thema. Durch die Heirat 1884 wurde er finanziell unabhängig; er setzte das Studium in Zürich fort, wo er FrankWedekindkennenlernte. Mit der Übersiedlung nach Berlin (1889) verzichtete er auf eine wissenschaftliche Karriere in Zürich. Mit seinem Bruder zusammen ließ er sich 1891 in einem gemeinsam erworbenen Haus in Schreiberhau nieder.
