If you and I went to the shop of a Hindoo, and there saw the man who owned the shop kneeling down before the stool on which he sat, to pray it to send him customers to buy his goods, and if we saw, as often we might see, the man put a little rice in a saucer, and place it on the floor before his stool, I think we should say, "What a silly, foolish man, to think the stool could be pleased with the rice, or send customers to his shop!" Or if we went to Mecca, and watched the pilgrims, who had come hundreds of miles, kiss the "black stone" in the wall of the great mosque, and go home happy and joyful, because they supposed their sins had gone out of their hearts into the stone to make it blacker, I think we should say, "Foolish Mahometans, to be so silly as to think that a kiss could send away the sins of the soul, and a dead stone could become black with the sins of men!" Or if we came nearer home--if we entered any of the churches in Spain, or Italy, or France, we should find, before a smartly dressed image of the Virgin, a piece of board held up by an iron rod, so as to make a little table; into the board were driven many sharp pieces of iron wire, and upon some of them were stuck tallow and wax candles, and these were burning away.
