About the Author:
Alois Riegl (geboren 14. Januar 1858 in Linz, gestorben 17. Juni 1905 in Wien). Er war ein österreichischer Kunsthistoriker, Denkmalpfleger und Vertreter der Wiener Schule der Kunstgeschichte. Er führte in der Kunsttheorie den einflussreichen Begriff des Kunstwollens ein. Er wendete sich gegen eine an Werteurteilen orientierten Kunstgeschichtsschreibung. Die antike Kunst versteht er als Ausgangspunkt der frühmittelalterlichen und orientalischen Kunst. Hermann Bahr schreibt über ihn in seinem Buch „Expressionismus“: „Das war Riegls erste große Tat: er hat uns wieder zwischen Kunst und Handwerk unterscheiden gelehrt, er hat die Kunst vom äußeren Zweck, dem sie schon zu erliegen schien, befreit, er hat aus der Kunstwissenschaft eine Geisteswissenschaft gemacht. [...] (Seine ganze Darstellung der Ästhetik Augustins ist übrigens prachtvoll, sie steht in dem denkwürdigen Schlusskapitel seiner »Spätrömischen Kunstindustrie«, in der, ganz unerwartet, sozusagen alles steht, was man über die Kunst zu wissen braucht, was man braucht, um Kunst lebendig zu verstehen.)“
