“Stoneboats and Piglets” provides a real-life glimpse into rural America during the 1920’s and ’30’s through the eyes of a “young feller” named Larry. Born on his parents’ North Dakota homestead in 1922, the nearest neighbors lived a mile or so away. Tappen, the nearest town, was a journey of several miles by horse-drawn wagon in summer, and horse-drawn sleigh in winter. The Drews and other families of the farming community supported themselves off the land. They were plenty busy and well-challenged! Growing up in this atmosphere of resourcefulness and hard-work, young Larry was both a keen observer and an enthusiastic participant. While the story swirls throughout the prosperity of the ‘20’s into the Depression of the ’30’s, Larry’s memories shed light on the character and determination of his family and neighbors as they adapted and endured through this unique period of history before America’s entry into World War II.

About the Author:
Larry A. Drew was born on his parents’ wheat ranch in Tappen, North Dakota in January 1922. He spent his early years on the family’s ranch helping with the sheep and milk cows. The Great Depression saw the family eventually settling to his grandmother’s farm in Westboro, Ohio. While attending high school there, he got the notion to go to college. This was a first for the family, and he enrolled in the University of Ohio. His education was interrupted for several years when “all hell broke loose” with the onset of World War II. Larry was a descendent of a long line of farming families from Pennsylvania and Ohio dating back before the American Revolution. This book is the story of his early and pre-war years, as “the last farmer” in his family’s history. Be sure to look for Larry’s second book describing his military experiences in the Pacific, entitled “Invitation to a War.”
