O Centro de Pedagogia Experimental - Casa da Praia, foi criado em 1975, dependente do Centro de Saúde Mental Infantil de Lisboa, destinado ao estudo, diagnóstico e tratamento de crianças que embora inteligentes, têm dificuldades na integração escolar e na iniciação à aprendizagem. O presente livro é o resultado dessa experiência de 12 anos que João dos Santos orientou até aos últimos momentos da sua vida. As conclusões a que chegou, juntamente com os técnicos que com ele trabalharam, foram as de que quase todas as crianças que à Casa da Praia recorreram eram instáveis ou bloqueadas, havendo sempre por detrás uma depressão acentuada, mais ou menos disfarçada por sintomas comportamentais diversos; de que uma grande parte das mães destas crianças eram muito deprimidas e de que os seus pais estavam frequentemente ausentes (do lar ou do país, doentes ou inválidos). Porque as festas são antidepressivas, A Casa da Praia é uma casa em festa, considerando-se festa como a vivência colectiva duma ideia que tem a ver com circunstâncias vividas por toda a comunidade onde a escola se situa, por alguns pequenos grupos ou colectividades. Toda a actividade das crianças da Casa da Praia é orientada pela ideia de que o movimento e a actividade externa virão a ser, mesmo antes da escola, progressivamente interiorizados sob a forma de pensamento e de actividade tendente ao desenvolvimento mental e, portanto, à compreensão da actividade simbólica.
