A Tempo explores the theme of passing time in poems and paintings in a journey through the seasons of the author’s life and the movements of her soul. The poems are divided into the four seasons since some are dark, others lighter, some lighter still, and a few even inspirational. A major influence is T.S. Eliot. A Tempo echoes his poetic rhythms and his movement from the soul’s wasteland to enlightenment. Another influence is Charles Tomlinson, the English nature poet and painter. In his book, Words and Images, his poems are accompanied by graphics, prompting Kobrin to illustrate each season with her paintings. Chinese brush painting, with the deep black of traditional ink, and the elegant, minimalist effect obtained by wielding the sensitive and versatile bamboo brush, was her inspiration for the illustrations. A variety of poems are included. Some are from the author’s Jewish background and studies, from her Buddhist practice and beliefs, from psychology, feminism, philosophy, and her explorations into energy work, dreams, the Tarot, astrology, and the primitive pagan inherent in all of us. Other poems were born out of a love of the sea, of growing things, nature, animals, and birds. Some are love poems, others about loss, some serious, others ironic or slyly poking fun. Many poems are about birth and a coming of age. Kobrin’s engagement with art runs through the poems – the sweet lines of the human figure, the shapes of leaves and branches, the tumble of clouds before a thunderstorm. These poems display a fascination with symbolism, the magic of myth, music, and metaphor, as well as the intricacies of language. “Father Time,” The author says, “Waves his wrist watch at the edge of my consciousness, reminding me to get on with living mindfully and joyfully. There is still so much I want to experience and explore; a world of sight, sound, and symphony.” In the introduction, Kobrin encourages her readers to, “Seize each second, cherish each moment, and treasure each day – before it’s too late!”

About the Author:
Shoshana Kobrin is an expatriate South African who, after thirty-five years in the US, still feels that California is her heaven on earth. After taking a Master’s degree in literature in South Africa, she pioneered a multi-cultural communications program during apartheid. When she arrived in America, she took her Master’s degree in psychology at John F. Kennedy University in California. For thirty-two years, Kobrin has been counseling, teaching, training, public speaking, and facilitating workshops and retreats professionally and in the community. Her first book, a user-friendly journaling guide, The Satisfied Soul GuideBook: Your Path to Transformation was published in 2011. Four self-help books followed, dealing with food and weight issues, addictions, and what she terms “The Satisfied Soul.” Roots and Wings: Growing up in Apartheid South Africa is a collection of short stories. A Tempo, published this year, explores the theme of passing time in poetry and painting. Books, reading, and writing have been an important part of Kobrin’s life since childhood. Natalie Goldberg’s Wild Mind, which introduced her to free, associative journaling, established a significant base to her writing. As a “Jubu,” her roots are in Judaism and she observes Buddhist meditation and practices. Her spiritual and creative life, which she defines as “connection in many spheres,” informs all her books. She lives in Walnut Creek, California, and enjoys lap swimming, ceramic figure sculpture and piano jazz.
