About the Author:
Through an inverted military career, H. John Poole has discovered a few things that more promotable people miss. After spending his first two years as a commissioned combat commander in Vietnam, he did his last seven as an enlisted tactics instructor. That allowed him to see why U.S. troops continue to have so much trouble with Eastern adversaries. Their own small-unit maneuvers are simply outmoded—so unlikely to surprise anyone as to be “premachinegun” in design. Donning advance electronics hasn't made them any less visible or vulnerable to conventional munitions. How most easily to correct this little “command” oversight forms much of the framework of Poole's work. Since retirement from the Marine Corps in 1993, John Poole has now written eleven tactics/intelligence supplements for the U.S. military audience. He has also conducted multiday training sessions (on advanced squad tactics) for 40 (mostly Marine) battalions, nine Marine schools, and seven special-operations units from all four U.S. service branches. Since 2000, he has done research in Mainland China (twice), North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, India (twice), Pakistan (twice), Iran, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania, Venezuela, and Sri Lanka. Over the course of his lifetime, he has visited scores of other nations on all five continents. He tried to visit Lahore in the late Spring of 2011, but his visa request was not honored by the Pakistani government. Between early tours in the Marine Corps (from 1969 to 1971), John Poole worked as a criminal investigator for the Illinois Bureau of Investigation (IBI). After attending the State Police Academy for several months in Springfield, he was assigned to the IBI s Chicago office. There, he worked mostly on general criminal and drug cases.
