Published in 2009 by Arte Aldia Ediciones in hardback with dustjacket (the dustjacket has a picture of the artist Olga Sinclair at work on the front cover with her name embossed in broad white text across the picture), this book both looks at the artist Olga Sinclair and provides a glossy colour catalogue of her works (paintings and sculptures) and shows pictures of her at work from 1995 - 2008. Contents: Olga Sinclair: Chromatic Illusions; Painting and Memory by José Manuel Springer; Works (catalogue of); Sculptures (catalogue of); Workshops; Chronology; and List of Works. About the artist: The reality of imagery in the paintings of artist Olga Sinclair is disguised by chromatic illusions that enhance then dissolve the plasticity of each object, while fragments of cloth are often applied to add contrast to the complexity of the surface texture. Renowned as a figurative painter whose technique of using pigment for soft chiascuro effects is applied to a range of subjects that include the human figure and still life arrangements, Ms. Sinclair is continually investigating ways to further manipulate the painting's effectiveness to reveal her personal aesthetic and at the same time present new ideas about the world that inspires her. The characters that she paints are not portraits, but rather generic types that afford her the opportunity to develop colour relationships in abstract terms - to simplify the source and emphasize the formal qualities of the painting itself. There is a sense of mystery as the imagery emerges out of layers of tonal variations, yet offers little clues beyond its presence as the subject of a painting, or perhaps merely an excuse to paint. The lighting that gives each object volume, yet bathes it in shadows, contributes to the mystery. The works is as much about the process of painting, as the end result. This is particularly evident in her still life paintings, some minimal abstractions of basic fruit forms and some collections of objects.
