Synopsis
This work is for ages 14+. It tells the story of how the tears of a child in a city stricken with yellow fever summon a mermaid named Cara and her sisters to help fight the illness that sailors of that day and age nicknamed Yellow Jack. This gentle fable blends history with mermaid magic, while telling of how the Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, Virginia was founded. It also explains why the city today holds a love of both mermaids and yellow flowers.
About the Author
Lisa Suhay was born in New York City and now lives in Norfolk, Virginia. She is a veteran journalist whose work has appeared frequently in the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and numerous other publications. She is the founder of the Heart and Art Mermaid Story Trail system in Norfolk, Virginia.
