ADVENTURE ON HIGH WHITE ISLAND

The summer of 1991 will be an exciting one for twelve year old HEIDI SMITH. She arrives at her trailer near Lake Nyona nine miles south of Rochester, Indiana unaware of the adventure that awaits her. Anxious to see the lake, she runs to the dock behind her mobile home and overlooking the mysterious White High Island, a huge forest across the lake. She's surprised when she sees a powerful blue light flickering on the island. Is it flickering in a resident's home? Are there any homes on the island?

Rumors say that HANS BACHMANN, a prisoner of war during World War Two and former aide to Germany's Adolph Hitler is living there. She asks her friend CRAIG MARKEY to go to the island with her and her ten year old brother SCOTT. But when he doesn't come to the dock as he promised, she and Scott row to White High alone to investigate. She gets there and begins to climb the steps leading to the top. Suddenly, she trips on one. She looks down and sees a small white book. Who does it belong to? She opens it to the middle and reads that it belongs to Bachmann. But that doesn't prove he's living on the island. Does it?

After discovering the diary, she investigates further. She pushes through the underbrush and comes to a clearing. She steps through it and is surprised. She sees the shape of a roof she thinks is a home but when she gets to the front window, she sees the blue light she saw flickering and realizes it's someone's laboratory. A man is hunched over a long table mixing something. She tries to take a breath but she can't because of the smell.

Surprised that she saw the man she runs to the back and looks into a window. She sees that Craig is lying bound and gagged on the floor. She returns to where Scott is waiting for her. She tells him to go to her friend's cottage and call CHIEF JIM MARKEY, the village police chief and Craig's dad. He returns with the chief. She watches him try to arrest Bachmann.
