About the Author:
Andres Duany, a principal of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co., is an internationally known architect and town planner. He is a founder and board member of the Congress for the New Urbanism and has co-authored two books: Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream and The New Civic Art. Duany has worked as visiting professor at many institutions and holds two honorary doctorates. Sandy Sorlien has been the coordinating editor of the model SmartCode since 2004. She was head of the Codes team for the Mississippi Renewal Forum after Hurricane Katrina. Sandy teaches the SmartCode and transect-based planning nationally and internationally, and has calibrated codes for municipalities from the Gulf Coast to New England, including New Orleans. A Philadelphia native, she is the author of Fifty Houses: Images from the American Road. William S. Wright is a Partner in the Real Estate and Commercial Transactions Practice Group at Balch & Bingham LLP's Financial Services and Transactions section. His work includes consultation on municipal land use regulation, and he has been instrumental in helping to adapt the SmartCode to Mississippi law and to Gulf Coast conditions. He has been a speaker at the SmartCode Workshop and has also spoken at the Land Development Conference on legal issues involved in Smart Growth development.
