Stolen From Gypsies is a Shakespeare-meets-Monty Python historical comedy by award winning playwright Noble Smith. A bedridden English lord narrates a magical tale to his story-loving servanta tale involving a kidnapped Gypsy babe, a tongue-tied accountant, a rich merchant, the merchant's ravishing daughter; magicians, spells, contracts in blood; pirates, rubes, fops, purloined estates; demons, transformations, duels, carnal temptations, imprisonment and redemption. It is illustrated with twenty beautiful pen and ink drawings. A fascinating glossary of words and personages from the era is also included.

Review:
"From the fertile imagination of Noble Smith. . .a novel full of color. . .that begs to be read aloud for maximum comic effect." -- The Oregonian, May 7, 2000

A wonderful book, full of wit, mirth and wild imagination...pen and ink illustrations...add a classic touch. -- Californian, May 18, 2000

Smith's first novel brings together a cast of pleasantly annoying characters in a fantasy full of bawdy humor and slapstick comedy. Like The Princess Bride (1976), where the tale unfolds through a grandfather reading a bedtime story to his grandson, the narrator here, Ambrogio Smythe, reads his gypsy tale to his faithful yet silly servant, Antonio. Throughout the novel, Antonio interrupts his master with suggestions for even lewder humor but also gives Ambrogio helpful ideas to improve the writing style, much to the master's dismay. The story itself is a parody of medieval romance literature, where fantasy, chivalry, and saving the damsel in distress are key elements. The hero of the tale, Godfrey Verrazanno, has been stolen from gypsies as a newborn and adopted by a wealthy Italian landowner. The separation anxiety causes Godfrey to speak only gibberish, and with a camel-like hump on his back, he appears pitiful and pathetic to the woman he adores, his adopted sister Mamooshka. Godfrey's sidekick and servant tells his master of a magician who can cure Godfrey of his many deformities, and there the trouble begins. Smith's novel will delight and entertain fantasy readers. From the Publisher:
Aubrey House Publishing is pleased to bring you Noble Smith's comic novel Stolen From Gypsies. Noble's love for language, history, and the absurd plot constructions of Shakespearean comedy are evident in this laugh-out-loud story. The book is beautifully illustrated by artist Carol Ingram.
