Review:
"Making the decision to stay home with my two children after a 12-year demanding, successful career that I loved was very difficult for me. It was a decision I never expected to make. I started to read Staying Home and I couldn't put it down. By the time I was done, I had a much clearer picture of the next step in my life--another phase that I could now see was just part of the journey. Staying Home laid out the challenges and the benefits, and made me see that this was a positive choice I could move towards with my self-respect and identity fully intact!" -- --Laurie Tennant

"Staying Home is a phenomenal resource for women considering at-home mothering. It addresses issues of living on one income, relationships between friends, relatives, and the "outside" world, and how to reaffirm your decision and be happy with yourself. The authors have great insight into women and their feelings in adjusting to the at-home world. This book also has a great reference list of organizations that can help you create a network of friends during your years at home. I would definitely give this book five stars." -- --Cindy Schival, Family Manager for 7 years

"Thanks for the good read! I first found Staying Home in our county library when I was disconsolately looking for some--any--material on moms who choose to be home. I was thrilled to find the book and it really made me feel better about my choice. Coming of age in the 1980s, I think women were kind of programmed to think that if you didn't have a career and a family, something was wrong with you. I don't think ANYONE in my graduating class ever said out loud they aspired to be a wife and mother. The book really made me realize there were other options besides working full-time." -- --Mary Williams
From the Author:
Don't stay home without this book
----------------Reviews Publishers Weekly: "A must for all mothers who are or want to be at home with their children." Arlene Rossen Cardozo, author of Sequencing: "An important book which should be read by every woman considering motherhood. It may change the course of the history of her life and the life of her family." Synopsis: This practical guide helps women through the emotional transition from working-world career to stay-at-home parent. Seasoned with plenty of practical advice, this reassuring guide explores every facet of the transition, from making the decision to feeling comfortable at home. The author, Martha M. Bullen:Author's comments on Staying Home To stay at home or not to stay at home--that is the question tormenting many parents these days. While my co-author Darcie Sanders and I wouldn't presume to answer that question for our readers, we wanted to take a look at the realities of at-home motherhood and help women through the often difficult transition from the workforce to the home.So we surveyed 300 at-home moms to find out why they had chosen to stay home, what were the hardest and easiest parts of the transition, and what wisdom they could pass on to other moms. We received hundreds of heart-felt replies (some with peanut butter and jelly stains on them), and knew we had exactly what we needed for our book. The final result was Staying Home: From Full-Time Professional to Full-time Parent. In Staying Home we also focused on:€ creating a new self-image as a home-based mom€ adjusting to changing relationships with your spouse, family and friends€ coping with isolation and 24-hour work days€ managing your loss of income and professional identity€ networking with other women€ and exploring ways to reenter the workforce once you1re ready.Parenting Magazine commented, "By combining practical information with soothing wisdom, the authors help career women navigate the sometimes rocky road to full-time motherhood." About the Authors: Darcie Sanders and Martha M. Bullen are also the authors of Never Throw Out a Banana Again, and their latest book on home businesses, Turn Your Talents into Profits. As recognized authorities on self-employment and family issues, the authors have appeared on "Today," "CBS This Morning," and numerous other TV and radio talk shows, and have been featured in dozens of newspapers and magazines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Customer Comments Cindy Schival from Alpharetta, GA , May 21, 1999 A terrific resource for women considering at-home mothering. AShaw123, Gin Shaw from Atlanta, GA , May 21, 1999 This book really helped me. I received Staying Home as a gift when I had been home with my first child for about 6 months. At that time, I was trying to decide whether or not to go back to work, and this book was exactly what I needed to read. Staying Home put into words the feelings that I had in my heart about being home with my son. It helped me to put things into perspective and to begin to take seriously my role as a mother at home. Over the past six years, I've recommended this book to dozens of other new mothers. And everytime I'm feeling a bit underappreciated in my role and need a boost, I pick up the book again and feel refreshed and renewed in my decision. A reader from Richmond, VA , April 28, 1999 Excellent resource for making THE decision to stay home After the birth of my son 2months ago, I knew I could not go back to work. But, I had a lot of fear about how I would deal with my needs for intellectual stimulation, external validation, connection with other adults, etc. This book echoes the experience of many other women who've been in the same position, offering suggestions and information about other support resources which I found to be extremely helpful. Since reading the book, I have accessed many of those resources and feel 100% more at peace with my decision to leave a job I love to do some of the most important work I can imagine...raising my son.
