Mystery, history, and philately meet in The Mystery Box
I like to think that The Mystery Box opens a door for the reader to appreciate three subjects very close to my heart-- mystery fiction, history, and stamp collecting-- and to appreciate the connections they open to us. The mystery story is a wonderful vehicle to explore the imagery of a postage stamp, that enigmatic image coming to us out of the past, issued for a certain purpose, at a certain point in historical time, by a country that might not even be "alive" anymore. That is why each of the stories in this collection is followed by a commentary, a blend of fiction and non-fiction and, of course, evocative imagery, for each story is illustrated with the stamp or stamps that served as inspiration for the tale. My guiding idea has been to offer the reader a method of traveling through time, swept along in the chase of a suspenseful tale and beguiled by the visual symbols that provoked the chase.
