Artistic possiblilities in working with polymer clays.
From the Introduction:Polymer Five is a casual consortium formed by five artists located in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in 1992: Pier Voulkos, Martha Breen (Urban Tribe), Michael and Ruth Anne Grove (Grove and Grove) and Jamey D. Allen. We five have been working with polymer clay for a number of years, and are among the main proponents of this not-quite-accepted and avant garde art form in the West. With the publication of Nan Roche's fabulous book, The New Clay, the polymer clays have quickly gained ground, respectability and popularity. When you see Pier Voulkos' wonderful necklaces, Martha Breen's unbelievably detailed clocks, Ruth Anne Grove's graceful dancing figures, Michael Grove's delightfully imaginative "Not-a-Vessel" vessels, and Jamey Allen's folded beads (a reincarnation from the past), you'll understand why their work has been an inspiration to so many. Other books available from Flower Valley Press of Interest to Craftsmen include: ·The New Clay by Nan Roche· ·Beads & Threads by Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Barnes· ·Beguiled by the Wild by Charley Harper· ·Inkle Weaving by Helene Bress
This book is different from most others.
Our publisher, Flower Valley Press, gave us an opportunity to compose a book that's different from any other work on polymer modeling compounds. Whereas the majority of books are technique-driven, with lots of advice on how to do stuff (and these are good and useful works), our book is basically biographical..., and we hope inspirational. The text decribes our individual histories as artists, what training we have from our pasts, how we developed various skills and approaches, and why we like this medium and revel in the creations we make from it. Almost surprisingly, our book has become even more popular in the past year than ever before——and we are gratified people continue to acquire it, and receive some of the enthusiasm that we also continue to experience——as our careers progress and we make further (r)evolutionary developments.
