If you plan to visit Louisiana's beautiful Bayou Teche and look at the Civil War sites there, I suggest that you take this book along. It covers many of the events that occurred in the area and is well written in a readable style. It has references, a good index, useful maps and will be a great help in finding and the sites where Civil War events occurred in this area and telling the story of what went on at these sites. If you are interested in details of events that occurred during the Civil War along the Teche this book is also a valuable resource. It is not as another reviewer notes "a `definitive' study" of this topic but Mr. Raphael never claims that it is, and its size alone dictates that it can not be. What information it has is well documented and it is the best study of this topic that I have been able to find. I have found it a great help in interpreting the diary of a soldier in the 48th Ohio who was stationed in Franklin, LA for part of 1863. The book's maps vary from an excellent one of the area from Brasher City to Charenton, to a number of maps produced from sections of Civil War period maps that are of lesser quality. All maps would benefit from an inset of a map of Louisiana showing the location covered but this can easily be done by the reader by locating the towns on a map of Louisiana. In general the book would be improved by more maps. The illustrations are well chosen and informative but limited in number.
