About the Author:

St John Ervine was born in 1883 in east Belfast. On moving to London as a teenager he met George Bernard Shaw and joined the Fabian Society. Ervine s first play, Mixed Marriage , was produced by Dublin s Abbey Theatre in 1911 pioneering realism on the Irish stage. In the 1920 s and 1930 s he was the drama critic for the Observer and one of the West End s most successful playwrights. In 1936 Ervine s play Boyd s Shop was produced and became the defining dramatic portrayal of Ulster life. Ervine was a prolific writer of journalism and novels, as well as biographies of Parnell, Lord Craigavon and George Bernard Shaw. By the 1940 s Ervine was Northern Ireland s most prominent writer. He died in 1971.
