The People of the Day books are so titled after "Men of the Day" a regular section that appeared in the 19th Century Vanity Fair magazine. Artists such as Carolo Pellegrini, "Singe", and Sir Leslie Ward, "Spy", contributed the caricatures at the time. "Spy" was certainly the most popular of the artists. They became a British institution with the magazines being sold as soon as they reached the news stands. Today the prints are highly sought after collectors' items worldwide.
About the Author:
The author, Peter Wynter Bee, has always wanted to produce a modern version, which he did in 2004 with People of the Day. The book was well received and it inspired him to continue.
Peter Wynter Bee was born in Surrey in 1955, where he still lives with his family, and has been a practising commercial lawyer for over 20 years. He has always been an enthusiast of the highly collectable and much sought after Spy caricatures that appeared in the 19th century magazine, Vanity Fair. The caricatures both satirized and praised eminent Victorian and Edwardian politicians, sportsmen, lawyers and other Men of the Day . Peter dreamed of producing a modern day version. His aim is to produce an annual volume with the profits supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
