Synopsis

What started in 2001 as a community project run by acclaimed London novelist Courttia Newland and prolific writer and performance poet Nii Ayikwei Parkes comes of age in this compelling anthology of short stories. Written to a format devised to produce stories that read in ten minutes or less, Tell Tales Volume I manages to entertain without sacrificing the depth of emotion and intrigue expected of a well-developed short. The unusual charm of Tell Tales Volume I also derives from the range of authors, new and old, who contributed work to it. It is incredibly diverse culturally and stylistically, embracing a range that includes the iconic Niall Griffiths, literary editor Karen McCarthy, lad lit hero and New Puritan Matt Thorne and literary fiction newbie Rajeev Balasubramanyam as well as a host of relatively unknowns - notably Tom Lee, Salena Godden, Steve Porter and Uchenna Izundu (whose Dear John story mirrors Niall Griffiths Coming of Age so uncannily in style, although with a totally different vernacular and subject). Edited by Courttia Newland and Nii Ayikwei Parkes, the stories range from hypnotic to despotic without apology or sentiment.

Ultimately, the rich selection makes for joyful reading. From the So whats wrong with me then? opening of Sharon Jennings X Men Reject to the Fuckin farce, thats what it was. Just embarrassin. of Niall Griffiths entertainingly unnerving Coming of Age, Tell Tales Volume I is unadulterated entertainment.
